During the last years FIDIA S.r.l. has been promoting the market of fiber-reinforced composite materials (FRP, Fiber Reinforced Polymer), used for shear, flexural strenghtening and wrapping of existing concrete, masonry or timber members due to:
- degradation (chemical attacks, rust of existing steel reinforcement or corrosion);
- design and/or construction mistakes;
- change in use;
- design code variation;
- retrofit-consolidation after earthquake shocks or fire exposure;
- consolidation of degraded structures in order to provide structural integrity and durability;
- protection of buildings and infrastructures subjected to dynamic loads generated by natural events, explosions of industrial facilities or terrorist strikes.
FIDIA S.r.l. offers consulting services to design that realize strengthening on existing historical-monumental patrimonies and encounter structural problems. FIDIA S.r.l. experts design effective solutions using FRP materials that are characterized by the successful strength/capacity/lightness ratio, which guarantees high performances and non-invasivity and, at the same time, lightness and stiffness to the strengthened member.
Moreover, retrofits through FRP are characterized by an extreme rapid installation, reduced social costs during installation, versatility and guarantee highly technological, durable and resistant solutions; the properties of such materials allow to increase the strength capacity and the stiffness of the existing structures only in the desired sections that do not satisfy the design specifications.
FRP composite materials are particurarly suggested for strengthening:
- beams, columns, slabs;
- vaults and roofs;
- bridge decks, piers, bentcaps;
that can present a concrete, masonry or timber structures.
Besides the most common "manual wet-lay-up" technology for retrofit solutions by which glass, aramid, carbon or steel fiber sheets are impregnated in situ through epoxy resins, also the use of laminates and pultruded profiles for structural strengthening has registered a remarkable improvement, thanks to their possibility of being installed similarly to steel plates or profiles, with the great advantage of having a much more successful weight/strength/stiffness ratios.
Pultruded profiles can be applied directly on the substrate, above all in case of RC and PC structures, using laminates that have rectangular section, bonded through epoxy resins in order to improve flexural and shear strenght capacities. IPE-HEA profiles are bonded on the extrados of timber beams in order to improve the inertia of the cross section without any additional weight impact on the structure, but reducing deformations and increasing the overall capacity.
Thanks to the co-operation with TEC.INN. S.r.l., a specialized contractor dedicated to strengthening with innovative materials and advanced technological solutions, FIDIA S.r.l. has recently introduced a new technology, well-known in the USA as NSM (Near Surface Mounted Bars) that assures flexural strengthening in negative moment regions or where the strengthening cannot be exposed to degradation or possible act of vandalism. The above-mentioned bars having a circular or rectangular section are inserted into the mortar joint between to clay tiles of a masonry structure or into a groove cut on the concrete surface, by filling them with resin in order to guarantee the suitable bond between the bar and the substrate, which is needed to transfer tensile stresses among the different materials.
